Yeah, the smoke ghosts were stupid. I agree with you both. It actually was a pretty competent movie up until that point with some great and spooky visuals. Really had some nightmarish visuals with the faceless twitching specters and the blood soaked and rusted medical equipment.
The House on Haunted Hill remake had some genuinely good and creepy stuff, with the shaky doctor ghost, but it started to go off the rails when Chris Kattan indicated the house was "alive." And then, at the end, when his ghost saves the day? Face-clawingly bad.
