I agree in concept, but it absolutely depends on the world design of the game. The main problem with minimaps, as I see it, is not so much the visual distraction as it is the fact that the assumption of their presence and use changes the way developers design their game worlds. The compass stuff is great until it isn’t. Games like Elder Scrolls for instance, when you have a handful of missions going on at once with different elevations, the compass system becomes a giant mess of arrows/markers covering up other markers. Minimap is fine.

Yes, I hate compass systems and I love mini-maps. I don’t spend the whole game looking at them. I just glance over every now and then if I’m a bit lost. So much better than opening a whole map.

Removing them entirely is a horrible idea.
