No need to apologize.
I'm an Arizonan, so I grew up being able to pronounce 'valle' and 'quesadilla' correctly, but not Siobhan, so I didn't really think take cities with large Irish-American populations into account.
And I'd argue that it's what separates a society from a collection of vengeful people. We live by the rule of law so that we don't devolve into our basest attitudes; that's what a society is and what citizenship is supposed to guarantee. I don't believe you forefit that because you commit a heinous crime nor do I…
I always answer that question with "Justice is not the same as revenge." And frankly, that's why victims don't get to decide what criminals are sentenced to: they are the complete opposite of a disinterested party.
If you think murder isn't cruel and unusual punishment, I don't know what to say to that 15th century attitude.
Something constitutional, to start with. Like, say, life imprisonment.
Locking their murderers up for the rest of their lives. Seems pretty straightforward to me.
Oh, please. Your comment basically stated this isn't a big deal. Violating that whole cruel and unusual punishment thing is a huge fucking deal. It doesn't matter who the hell it happened to, or what they were convicted of. It's like those horrific prison rape jokes. Not funny. Not appropriate. Not intelligent.
I think the recent botched executions make it pretty clear that the problem is that they can't survive the scrutiny under the 8th amendment. We have no fucking problem pulling new constitutional rights out of the Supreme Court Justices' asses for rich douchebags, but criminal defendants can't even have the ones…
Agreed! I was visiting some relatives across the country, and I ended up getting grilled on my anti-death penalty position. "I don't think the state should kill people, because it puts innocent people wrongly convicted at risk, and because it is to the spiritual detriment of those you ask to participate — the…
Yeah, so "I'm against the death penalty, but..." is a terrible way to start a sentence if you're actually against the death penalty.
So tell it. Calling her "the victim" and posting a photo and a lurid description of her death doesn't commemorate her. She was a young woman. If you want to pay tribute to her, tell her story.
Who says we don't care about victims? What the hell are you talking about?
How does this make us any better than them?
Why would I read a defense of murder and bloodlust?
And how does any of this justify murdering a prisoner?
"Execution"? I believe you mean murder. Pure and simple murder of a prisoner. Fucking bloodlust, revenge sickness that has nothing to do with justice and society.
Yea or they just need to take a break from their jobs for their own sanity. I'm sure at one point or another everyone is capable of snapping because their job is driving them crazy at which point they should say, hey I need a retreat. I'm losing it.
She's only a resident and she's already cynical to the point of insulting patients behind their backs? It sounds to me like she needs to get out of that environment as soon as she is able and surround herself with professionals that will provide better support and mentorship.
