I really thought the third one had the potential to give more depth to the Lycans going forward but it looks like they scrapped that whole idea and went back to them fighting each other when clearly they should be working together against their common enemy.

What you say about The Matrix is true, but what about a prequel that tells the story of one of the previous Chosen Ones? That could be done well. Also, while watching the entire rise of the machines may be boring, a prequel that takes place during the last year or so could be neat to watch.

There was also a sequel book that explained a lot of the reason for his visit as well.
