Yep, that have mostly done that, see frame replacements on trucks way older than both my children. I would bet a new engine in a truck is a $15k or so cost. The whole new engine, plus all the hours to install is not a cheap endeavor.

Your 4th amendment rights protect you from gathering evidence to use against you, not sure if it would protect the gathering of your property to be used against a 3rd party since it would be their 4th amendment right the court would be concerned with. 

This is what I have issue with. Most people need their vehicles daily to get to work, pick up kids, ect. Just taking their car like that seems to be going too far. I would think most would be willing to hand over the footage, but still.
