Hero vs Hero conflict stories start way before Civil War, that just happened to be the largest. Remember Marvel’s old Contest of Champions (the predecssor to the original Secret Wars)

Heroes vs Heroes has always been a major entertainment draw, where have you been? Because in typical stories, Heroes usually have plot armor so they ultimately cannot lose against the villain, that’s what makes hero vs hero stories so interesting, because you cripple that plot armor.
