Honestly, I rather liked them. I've read The Giver more times then I care to count, and I honestly enjoyed Gathering Blue on its own merit (first time I read it was in 8th grade, and until I read Messenger years later, I never even knew the books were all connected.)

I think the major difference between these kinds of games and AAA games "sunsetting" is that at least with most AAA games, there are going to be people who will crack and maintain these games long after the authentication servers go down.
