This crime is tragic, and the police officer's response is certainly not the best. I know some other people have made similar posts, but I wanted to post how I read his quote:

I'm sorry, Officer Rodriguez, but are you trying to suggest here that killing someone because they're transgender isn't a specific enough reason? Or maybe that the reason doesn't count because it's not on your official "hate crime" cheat sheet?

It's awful. If she was trying to craft a way of stating how upset she was, she literally couldn't have conceived of anything more disrespectful. I'm becoming more and more certain that is site is disappearing up it's own arse language wise. It doesn't help the cause when the language is so exclusionary.

"In horrific news out of Fort Myers, Florida, a trans woman of color has been murdered, and her body set on fire, then dumped in a garbage bin. I just can't right now, I just can't even."

If you are genuinely cut up by this, how about showing some respect for the dead (and journalistic integrity) by using full

That this is a horrible story by itself, does the writer really need to insert 'transgender' and 'color' (I missed that at first) into the title? Don't tell me that he/she did not try to attract some sentimental responses here.

Men and boys who commit domestic violence don't necessarily hate women as a whole. Even the ones who kill their partners don't necessarily hate them.

Maybe you should have mentioned that in the article. Did you have anyone read this before publishing? it's just not a good article.

With the exception of her father (who continued to use male pronouns, despite his daughter's identity),

A hate crime is when someone targets another person specifically because of a discriminatory factor. A man murdering a woman, or a person of colour, or a lgbtq person, etc. is only a hate crime if he targeted them specifically because of that factor. If a white man murder's his black wife because she cheated on him,

By the way, stuff like this:

Yea... Uhmmm if you lose your shit & wanna cover your ears and go lalalalalalalalala just bc someone uses "they" instead of she or he....

Your response isn't totally fair. Most people who are murdered including transgendered people KNOW their murderer. So the idea that they may have been killed by some random act of violence even if transgendered is remarkably low. Certainly its a factor to be evaluated. But it isn't the only factor. So I

I worked in trial support for a long time, and getting to see the back end docs compared to what is released shows a huge difference between what gets told to the press and what is being investigated. In general police don't want to say anything that could compromise their investigation, prejudice a jury, or give ammo

Don't judge her father in parenthesis like that. You're nobody to that family.

For the same reason that I think male on male partner violence or female on female violence is not rooted in misogyny or misandry. Domestic violence is too complex to sum up to one single underlying cause. If I use your logic, then a gay man beating his partner secretly hates all men. It doesn't make sense. However,

'I just can't right now, I can't even.'

This is terrible.

I was reading about her, and apparently once she got in trouble for prostitution, and I'm wondering if she got killed while doing that. Prostitution is incredibly dangerous, and that's one of the reasons why I favor legalizing it. It would make it safer I think.

I don't think the officer meant for it to be interpreted that way, sometimes murders happen for no reason.

Not to come off as snippy. But why would you assume domestic violence related murders are misogyny based?
