If I remember correctly it required you to increase your strength by 4 from when you first attempted to pull it out. You could potentially never be able to retrieve it if your first attempt was too high.

They don't come back from a Graug bite. Ever. Also they seem to not come back when killed by a 3rd party, IE in house fighting, human shield, wild animals.
