I could be mistaken, but I remember them talking about how it could tell if you handed the controller to someone else with an account on the machine and it would sign them in, so I assumed that's what the purpose of an LED would be. But you're right, I don't know how well it would work being on the front.

Controllers don't have distinct facial topography to recognize, so the LED is what the Kinect uses to tell them apart.
