Honestly, the puzzles that were inspired by this part of the film were my favorite part of the Blade Runner computer game.

How does one get additional frigates? I’m guessing one way is by purchasing a new freighter, but are there other ways? I’d love to send my fleet on more missions, but I don’t have any missions left that my one frigate can handle by itself. 

There should be three docking bays with glowing blue lights (like space stations have for their entrance) near the bridge of your freighter. Fly close enough and the tractor beam should take you in to land automatically.

If you save and exit, then load up the game again, your other ships should be on your freighter. I acquired 4 ships before even getting a freighter, but they didn’t appear on it until I’d left and returned to the game.

So the tutorial goes past repairing your ship now? Because the only mission I have now is to go to some ancient ruins. I thought that was a story mission, not a tutorial mission.

I also tried this with the Advanced Mining Laser. I had the materials, so I made a mission to build in in the Guide section. But though it said I could build it, no icon for it showed up as something to build in my multi-tool. A vendor at the space station had the blueprint for it, so I bought it, and THEN I was able…

Um, okay, I spoke too soon. It game me the mission to build one and I collected the resources but even though the mission tells me I can build it, a terrain manipulator doesn’t show up as a thing I can build in my multi-tool.

AH! So  apparently there’s technology in the “Guide” section that you can select and then it will give you the recipe/mission to create a thing.

In order to mine them, you have to have a terrain manipulator for your multi-tool, so you should also make that as soon as possible. Don’t worry—it doesn’t take rare resources to make that one.

So it WAS a bug hunt after all.
