This past weekend, The Guardian ran an opinion piece written by a young Muslim-Australian woman — Yassmin Abdel-Magied, a fairly well-known activist and Tedx Talk participant — explaining why she felt she had no choice but to walk out of Lionel Shriver’s lecture after 20 minutes and despite her mother’s objections.

Good point/observation. There’s also the concept of feeling/hearing “the calling” which, most nuns will tell you, actually does happen. Obviously, it’s something very few spiritual people ever experience.

I’m pretty sure the proper term is “annotating” and, yes, it was great fun, especially on the “Dirt Bag” columns.

That’s one of the first thoughts that sprung to my mind, too. I’m not a Lena Dunham fan but, in all fairness, what Jezebel subjected her to was heinous and the vast majority of the commentariat shared/expressed that viewpoint, to no avail.

This influx of Gawker commenters? Not on this thread, not even close. Perhaps you should reread it more closely. It’s chock-full of Jezebel commenters who’ve been here for years, some from the very beginning way back in 2007. Did it escape your notice that everyone more or less has the same critique, one that’s quite

“Gobbity gobshite” packs a wallop, too. ;=)

Glad to help and glad that so many others chimed in to (also) back you up on this. I just wish people like Anna would “listen” to what so many are saying/confirming.

You’ve every right to bring this up. Historically, Jezebel — the website, I should stress — has taken a feminist-when-convenient stance. It’s been most noticeable whenever they’ve gotten themselves into hot water over the years: in those circumstances, they’ve been mighty quick to correct commenters who label it a

Don’t know if this’ll ring any bells but I joined Twitter due to an overwhelming need to jump on the bandwagon and #TellVicEverything. With that said, I distinctly recall following Margaret Atwood and Jann Arden shortly thereafter. (Jann Arden is a treasure in her own right, for a variety of reasons).

She is a queen, with a great (sometimes even self-deprecating) sense of humour!

Also joining the cast, in the role of the “Disapproving Woman”.....

I think they used to have mods ages ago.

I’m confident Céline will find her way, slowly but surely, but she’s lost the love of her life and it’s only been 7 months, so perhaps she’s taking “baby steps” right now. All things considered, though, she’s bearing up remarkably well, and more power to her for that.

Deleted.

Me too. Plus, on top of all that, Natasha Richardson played the twins’ mother. (Very hard to watch, she was such a great actress).

It’s the squads of influencers that I’m more leery of, hard-sell self-promoters and their strong-arm tactics of persuasion. ;=)

By pure coincidence, I was reading this link — from vogue.com — just last night, its focus: 5 of the original “cool girl” models, none of whom is under 40. It came as a breath of fresh air, really, to see phrases like:

Perhaps that was the reason behind the I’d-rather-be-anywhere-but-here vibe Posh was giving off when the Spice Girls took part in the closing ceremonies of the London Olympics.

I gotta agree. Mel C. is far and away the most talented Spice Girl and has even had some success as an actress on the London stage. (Not just musicals, either).

This man is no longer a suspect. Here’s one of many tweets confirming as much:
