Comparing different kinds of charisma aside, Road House’s zen-lite Dawson was a swerve in the typical stoic fighter route, and “I want you to be nice.” Replicating it would be hard, but ex-UFC guy is maybe the most uninteresting version possible.

Then I tend to wonder if you’re a fan of Bond in general. Because although Skyfall is absolutely dumb as a bag of rocks, that still somehow makes it more clever than the back half of Connery’s run, just about all of Moore’s, 75% of Brosnan’s, and half (so far) of Craig’s. And while I agree its treatment of women is awf…
I’m still going to see it. I fucking love the Bond movies without taking them too seriously. They’re always entertaining and a fun way to spend a few hours.
I want to tell the reviewers here that it’s ok to like things sometimes. That doesnt make you uncool.
Casino Royale was a great Bond movie , all the subsequent Bond movies have sucked in one way or another.
Exactly, you could cut the romance out of the movie and it would hardly change. And as I said, Grant and Barrymore actually have decent platonic chemistry—it’s just that neither look or act remotely interested in having sex with each other.
Hollywood put out more Westerns than I think it’s possible to imagine nowadays. But we got the Searchers, the Wild Bunch, Unforgiven, etc., out of it as a result.
So even if Sturgeon’s Law applies to these knock-offs (and it does), we’re likely to get some very good films along the way.
Whoa, what season of A Handmaid’s Tale is this? 17?
Man, I still love Payback. One of my all time favorite movies.
I thought you were going to name Snake Eyes...
I believe in the vaccine’s ability to save my life and keep me out of Intensive Care, and likely out of the hospital as well. But still too many questions about whether I can somehow pass it on to my kid.
I had my heart set on seeing this and Dune in the theater. This was before it seemed like Delta was gonna fuck everything up. Now... if it was just me, I’d do it. Take a day off, go on a random Tuesday at 11 AM, take my chances the theater will be empty, wear a double mask throughout, and if I get sick, I’m vaccinated…
“Well, we know that Ted and Robin is the eventual endgame, so we need to keep demonstrating how he never quite got over her.”
It’s not even deconstructing the genre, it’s just reiterating the genre’s tropes with cursing and gore. The core fantasy of a superhero movie is a morally righteous person using violence to solve an existential problem - it’s very much a product of the World War 2 / postwar era. “Logan” comes the closest to actually…
I was afraid that the crime would be solved at random, by Jess giving up the photo, rather than Mare’s police work and that really irked me. So, I was ultimately really glad that Mare solved the crime. As for Ryan, there were plenty of seeds there and it all fits, but I totally agree that there were lots of false…
I thought he’d said he looked for it when he heard a sound outside - the sound of Ryan getting it - and that’s when he found it missing. Considering he’s apparently struggling with some loss of faculties, it didn’t seem unusual to me that he lost track of that story until well after his wife had passed, which is when…
Speaking of custody I was also not really satisfied with the resolution of the Carrie plotline: it was clear there was going to be movement there after she had her scare in the tub (at which point I’m pretty sure the show was telling us she was still sober and just stretched too thin), but I was figuring this would…
I’m just mad about the whole episode and this is what I’m fixating on. I’ve been worried about baby DJ since the start of the show, and now he’s being raised by a woman who doesn’t love him. And he’s expected to bond with his half-brother who killed his mom. It’s all kinds of messed up.
Another possible plot hole: we see Ryan steal the gun, shoot Erin, then return the gun all seemingly in the same night. And late at night at that. If that’s the case, is Powell just going into his tool shed multiple times a night to look at his gun? Because the way he described the missing gun to Mare, it sounded like…
