I would suggest that if your job REALLY requires 24/7 coverage, that is, you are getting legitimate(*) after hours calls on a daily basis, then the company needs to hire a shift person to cover after hours work.

I think there’s a bigger flaw than that. Go back a month later and ask how satisfied they are with the lamp and I’d bet that the people who got the friend’s pick are more satisfied than people that got the one they picked out themselves.
