Heller's a little off on Deadwood. It was Keith Carradine, not David, as Wild Bill Hickok. And, more significantly, Wild Bill's death was one of several historical facts (petitioning for statehood was another) upon which Milch & Co. draped the drama of Deadwood. It wasn't just canon, it was history.
