There are any number of reasons to do it, not least of which is to pressure the person that has it, if they are reluctant to turn it over or seem to be hedging.

I work closely with someone that spend decades investigating these crimes and I used to have to review tapes of other kinds of horrific crimes. It definitely takes a toll.
