The grapefruit trend was strong and pervasive. My grandmothers fairly nice set of silverware came with 2 grapefruit spoons which had serrated edges. I always liked to use it for my cereal even though it was a wild game of trying not to slice your lips. 

My dad is an amazing cook, and he attributes it to a pretty similar reason. He always referred to it as “defensive cooking.”
