The problem is they NEED it to be true.  Because there’s not enough high profile hate crimes going on, so having something that feeds the fury is important.

I think the evidence strongly suggests that the cops knew this was a hoax early on and made sure to get all their ducks in a row before going officially public with it. It would be amusing if part of the reason they were leaking like a sieve earlier was to try and give him a chance to come clean.
