I would've gone with Mazda instead of an Impreza for compact cars. A bit higher end and I would choose the WRX/STi over the Mazda3Speed. Looking forward to the WRX Concept into production although the tweaks between now and then could drastically change the car's appearance.

It is essentially a mini CX-5.... same platform. That being said, the CX-5's handling is great.... and it will be wonderful hunkered down to the ground!
I havent driven the 2014 IS yet, but I have driven a 2014 6 Touring with a manual. It was a very nice car. I wouldn't buy it in the current motor, I have a feeling the Diesel will be the better motor. There was no desire to go. In re to safety, it's funny that folks use the worst-case F350 T-Bone scenario to buy bigger and safer cars, but they never take sensible steps to ensure their safety (e.g. seatbelts, putting down the cell phone, not driving like an asshole).
