Stock DSMs are totally reliable - even the 7-bolt 4G63's. Too bad a stock DSM is about as common as the Easter Bunny.

One exception - the guy who buys the bad-ass body kit, pays to have it installed or manages to install it himself, but then cannot afford to actually have the car painted. As a result, he's stuck driving his "red and primer" Honda Corolla all over town.
In the Boxster owner's defense, to quote a Porsche mechanic, "Every time you put the top down, but $10 in the glove box. That way, when it breaks, you have the money to fix it."
