I'm not sure why people are up in arms about this. If you're a non-essential employee, you can't "volunteer" at the Fed. Work in any capacity is covered under this, which includes being on email/voicemail and using your work provided phone to do so.

@Helis: Go to school and demand a better education. While place like DC get screwed because we're not allowed to manage our own budget, most other areas can provide services through state money. The military won't really be affected that much, they already have their funding.
