I dropped my Arc S multiple times (and once face first into concrete) and it was just fine with a small (barely noticeable dent in one of the corners), and i've dropped my current Thl twice and nothing yet. If your phone is made of glass it might break easier, but you don't have to buy a case to keep it safe...
I'll only agree if you want to re-sell it, because you absolutely want to make sure it is in the best of conditions. As for the rest, sure, they might get one or two scratches here or there, but in no way do they get in bad condition or even non-great condition.
