That is a terrible way to remove the pit from the knife. Better to pinch from the dull side. Unless you enjoy the occasional hand injury.

And given the number of military installations in and around San Diego I would guess it cost them very little for transportation so they thought "Why not? Free MRAPs are the best MRAPs."
