And given the number of military installations in and around San Diego I would guess it cost them very little for transportation so they thought "Why not? Free MRAPs are the best MRAPs."

There is a stretch of Bloch Street that is pretty effin steep as well. I'd be curious to know what the grade was there.

I grew up there - moved away when I was 25 to go to grad school (and desperate to go back). You might consider looking outside city limits up around Carlsbad and Oceanside. You should be able to find housing for a more reasonable price and you would be close to SD and closer to LA and Orange County.
