I've been all over the country and by far the best area for independent pizza places is in the NYC, New Jersey, Connecticut area. They really take pizza seriously there. The further west you go, the worst the pizza gets it seems.

I live outside Philadelphia. I used to deliver for a indie pizza place, and even after eating their food three times a week for two years, its still my favorite pizza I can find.
