Yeah the relay one is more easily explained. It's most likely because of the cascade effect as the energy is transported through the relay rather than in an explosive manner.
Actually, it's 4 different endings that are discernable(really 16 different endings depending on if you get to choose them and whether or not Earth survives)...it's massively stupid.
