Our brains can infer depth from things like shadows, obscuration, perspective, etc. but it's not a true sense of depth. It's more of guesswork your brain is doing, similar to the way an optical illusion distorts the way things look. For true depth perception, you need stereoscopy (try going somewhere brand new without

You're misunderstanding how the accommodation process works. What triggers where your eye focuses? It's not the actual depth of the object, but its PERCEIVED depth. That is, where it looks like the object is. Your brain has no way to know that you're looking at a flat screen when it's presented with two offset view

Tell that to the vain people of the world (also known as at least 75% of the First World population).

Tell that to the vain people of the world (also known as at least 75% of the First World population).

You have a very narrow mindset. And a bit of incorrect information. Close both eyes so you can't see anything, and have someone bring you somewhere you've never been. Now open ONLY ONE EYE so you're seeing in 2D and try to navigate this space. Can you do it? Yes. Is it easy? Nope. While we can infer depth from things

What about 90% of the movies today couldn't be done in black-and-white? Nothing. It just ADDS to the experience. Adding depth gives the entire thing a sense of realism that would be dulled if you settled for 2D just because "you can".

Well...I half agree. I think by now 3D is out of its infancy and into its teen years. Filmmakers have had long enough to learn what works and what doesn't; it's time they step up to their expectations.

Ankylosaur refers to the taxonomic order, while Nodosauridea is the taxonomic family. So nodosaurs are types of ankylosaurs.

Depth can express plenty of information, particularly with regards to relative location of objects and people in the scene. For example, looking through a window down at someone on the street. You can do that in 2D, but it doesn't give you a sense of just how far away you are—for example, how high that 3rd-story

What faith? I've never had faith in humanity. At least not since I turned 10.

That's not true at all. Each eye only ever sees a 2D image, even in real life. Looking at an apple, your left eye sees a 2D image of the apple, your right eye sees a different 2D image of the apple, and your brain combines those together to figure out what the 3D object looks like.

So...a helicopter with below-vehicle rotors? A subcopter, if you will?

1. Keyword is "should" never be. But people are generally vain, in case you haven't noticed.

Yep, that's what I've been saying: the cinematographers are using the tool of 3D all wrong in many cases.

I'm not "believing the party line", I'm talking about what I've noticed from movies in my own experience. When's the last time I saw something sticking into my face? Pirates of the Caribbean 4 in 3D, for one example completely off the top of my head. It's not old-fashioned, it still occurs all the freaking time,

...how so?

...90% of those references have gone over my head. Never seen Hostel, never seen TGWTDT, I have no idea what the "dead body clips" are. Makes it hard to imagine all that.

I don't think I'm quite as suggestible as the person in that quote. Watching a bunch of nasty stuff all day long for a long time would certainly be uncomfortable, but I don't think it would warp my sense of reality. I wouldn't start to assume any adult/child photo is a child molester or rapist. But maybe I can only

Watching child porn and beheadings and gore all day...what could be better, right?

Because Indians or workers at the Mechanical Turk would be okay with child porn and beheadings...?
