"Another you"? Maybe I have a different definition of "me", then, because the word "me" implies a single individual. As in, there's only one me. A copy is not me, it is a copy of me. There cannot be two "me's", and there cannot be two "you's". If there are, then one is not "you".
1) No, it's not you. The robot version is not you; you exist in a coma, with no conscious awareness of anything. When your mind is put back in your body, you're conscious again, so it's you now; however, the memories of the things the robot experiences are not your own memories. They're the robot's memories. There is…
I think you're misunderstanding me. It is "you" for all intents and purposes, except for awareness. The avatar believes it's you, and for the avatar, there's no gap in consciousness. But for you, you're dead. There is no more consciousness.
And again, I'm not talking in certain terms. I'm just stating the only possibility that makes sense given what we know. Of course, in science, such possibilities are called facts...
Yes, we can. In fact, Giz recently had a post about an industrial process that can make ANY electronic device waterproof without adding any visible bulk. It's just ridiculously expensive, but it exists. Let's see if I can find it...
Um...why do you have a lye tank? Just askin' (against your urging).
Interestingly, I just mentioned this exact thing to someone the other day. My phone was declared DoA after an unwelcome meeting with some salt water, so after a lot of back-and-forth with Sprint and their authorized dealers, I turned to someone and said, "Well, now we know we won't have to worry about the robot…
It has all the same PAST experiences. That's an important distinction. It's basically a "living" (if you want to call it that; depends on the avatar itself) memory backup, and possibly a copy of your thought patterns.
It's you in every way except in awareness. The avatar would be aware, but you would be aware of different experiences until you die, at which point you would be aware of nothing. The copy would continue on, but it would be processing its new experiences independently of your own brain, and as your brain is dead, you…
I'm more a physicalist (materialist, if you prefer). I believe our consciousness is nothing more than a result of the interactions between our neurons and other molecules in the brain. If we can copy those interactions and simulate those molecules, we'd end up with an exact copy of our consciousness.
I wouldn't say "no one". I care. I'm sure a process like this would be extremely expensive, possibly dangerous, etc. When considering that kind of risk, I want to know what I'm getting into. If my self-awareness can be transferred into the computer (by some sorcery or another), I'd do that. It would literally mean…
+10, but then -20 for reminding me that House is over :(
Why would they appeal to stereotypes? Because it's an ad. That's one of the things ads do.
I'm not stating it as fact, I'm simply saying that IF one were to upload one's mind into another physical body (i.e. an avatar), THEN the copy would not be the same person. It only makes sense when you consider that such a process, if possible, could be done whether you're dead or still alive. Consider the effects…
It's not supposed to be quantified. I am, however, qualifying it. "You" is the sum of your memories, thought patterns, personality, and self-awareness. While the first three might exist inside your avatar, the last is not. It would have its own self-awareness separate from yours, making it a different entity.
Not a Star Trek fan. Reference is over my head. I'm guessing Dr. Corby was working on avatars?
I get that. But as you said, what you left behind would have no experiences. I'm not saying you'd somehow know that you're missing it. I'm just saying that you'd be missing it. It all comes down to self awareness.
It's the same exact thing as the ultimate 2045 goal. It's a brain backup. It's not you, so other than to keep your IDEAS alive, there's no point. It doesn't keep YOU alive.
You're experiencing it all up until the separation. As soon as you transfer your consciousness to another physical object, it's no longer you, but merely a copy.
