Just spitballing ideas - An electromagnetic launch rail (catapult) might be a way to get some extra range by easing the takeoff burden, or an electric tug plane (like for gliders) could help get electric planes off the ground. Or you could have external drop-tank drone batteries that detach and return to the launch…

I think those were open-air nuclear ramjet cruise missiles. The thorium reactor was invented to deal with radioactive exhaust problem to create a more humane aircraft.
