I totally agree I’d love to see them add more of their homegrown themes along with all the licenses. FWIW, the game is getting LEGO City Undercover (based on the WiiU game, of course, but that in turn was based on the classic “daily life” LEGO City theme).

Why couldn't you use the minifigures in this with the rest of your LEGO? They're not permanently attached to the bases, though a lot of commenters on this story seem to think they are.

They are. It's been confirmed the figures are conventional LEGO minifigures that you put together and put on the NFC bases, and the accompanying vehicles / accessories are similarly traditional LEGO builds using LEGO elements (hence the piece counts found on all the packages).
