The ridged barrel-shaped body, combined with the lack of relation to other creatures, gives it away—obviously the juvenile form of these guys.

Well, which part do you have trouble understanding? Do you not see why if each of your possible "grandparent" slots is occupied by a different person you'll have 4 of them, if each of your possible "great-grandparent" slots is occupied by a different person you'll have 8 of them, and so on doubling with each…
"This article could have been decent if Giz took out its lame bias from it... Have they become so apple obsessed that they are trying to give google a bad name?"
But is a word like "bisexual" supposed to be a stand-in for what group you identify with or what lifestyle you choose, or is it more like a Kinsey-esque scientific description of what people you are able to be sexually aroused by? You could make a case for either—maybe we need two separate sets of words for each idea…
Just look at Doc Savage and The Shadow. Who really remembers Tarzan now? (There's been a lot of talk about the fact that John Carter is not as well known as Tarzan, but I'm not convinced that Tarzan is well known either. Not among people under the age of 30, anyway.) I think part of the personality thing is that the owls are drawn in a much more cartoony fashion where the cats are drawn fairly realistically...capturing each Doctor's personality with photorealistic owls would be a lot tougher (though I think it works pretty well with primates, look at my comments below)
That looks like an interesting book, thanks—I'll check it out.
This makes me wonder if there was any sci-fi by male writers in that era that actually envisioned a female president, or just women in other prominent leadership roles (and not counting science fiction about amazon type societies that's just based on taking a mirror image of "traditional" male-dominated societies).…
District 9 started life as a low-budget short much like this...I don't get quite the same feeling of originality of the premise/style from this but still it seems promising, and I like the idea that in the future we'll see more independent sci-fi filmmakers getting attention by starting out with shorts like these.
