How is saying "It's hot as Africa" racist?

You've cornered the market on humor, I guess. No one else can make a joke when cobra, brah! is in the room...

Meanwhile Dragonball had seasons long worth of staring contests and 3 minutes worth of combat.

Is that like how all black people who live in south central are drug dealers and car thiefs? Oh wait....that would be racial stereo typing. But he's white, so it's okay I guess.

I feel as if this is yet another one of those cases where we're just dying to be up in arms about something. Your idea that they should do away with the monkey tshirt design because of the possibility it might get placed on a hanger with a black child is absurd. Why does everything that could be interpreted as racist

Awww, you're professionally outraged. Is it working? Are you getting your professionally outraged clicks? I notice you're not upset about the little girl being relegated to princess. Nor are you upset that the other little boy is being groomed for warfare.

it's not really offensive though, to me. everyone i know calls their toddler "monkey" at some point. i would buy that shirt in one instant for my nieces and nephews.

I think that this company is probably not making a statement by putting the black kid in the monkey shirt. i think any kid can buy the monkey shirt.

isn't it?

I admit I have not read Said's book, but if I'm not mistaken the focus is on western misunderstandings of (and the resulting misrepresentations of) eastern cultures. That's why I'm saying this isn't Orientalist, or at least not based on what has been described of Drift in this article and discussion. Suggesting that

See the definition of racism above. Also, as I've mentioned in other posts here, borrowing from or being inspired by another culture when creating entertainment is not racist. The things about Drift that people are citing as being racist or Orientalist are neither. Japan is where Haiku originated. Samurai actually

While that is clearly not the case and definitions can change over time, that still hasn't happened with the word 'racism.' What you're doing with the word 'racism' would be like me deciding that 'rape' should actually also apply to situations where one party simply regrets his or her decision after the fact (despite

So your interpretation of a word is more legit than the dictionary's...

Brian, you obviously have a much deeper knowledge of many of the issues than I do as a member of the Kotaku East wing. I don't disagree with anything you said either. But I guess the part I don't necessarily get is when you criticize Bay for "playing the ambassador with his CGI robots."

Dictionary definitions do the trick when the argument is calling something racism when it is, by definition, not racism.

I'll leave this here for you as well.

I don't know why this bothers me so much, but: Race is not equal to culture. Using stereotypical black behavior is not racist, not is drawing from Japanese culture. It might be shallow and white-centric, but it's not racist.

MK is the benchmark in gore. They set the world on fire when they arcade caused mass controversy. I'm pleased to see Ed Boon and friends continuing down the same path that brought them to critically acclaimed status. I can't have friends over without at least playing a couple rounds of MK between us all.

"I asked him how he felt about people who didn't find beauty in the gore."

If all criminals felt the general public would go to this length to catch them, there would be less criminals. thats just science.
