I’m not typically a fan of cheesy baby announcements, but if I ever get pregnant, I want that bun in the oven cake.

They will if you make yourself available to them about the big shit. If you bully, berate, belittle, intimidate, and otherwise act like a prison warden rather than a parent, they won’t tell you a goddamned thing. I’m fairly shocked at how much I can get out of my 12 year old son because he trusts me to listen before…
Nope. Best practices for suicide reporting recommend not using “committed,” which sounds like a crime or, to religious communities, like a sin, and “kill yourself” is just insensitive, crude, and poorly phrased. “Died by suicide” is the phrasing recommended by mental health professionals and the American Foundation…
Ugh, do we really need to pile on here? theres no way to know what caused this. I highly doubt the dad had any inkling that she would react this way, and he’s probably blaming himself too —anyone would. public shaming seems stupid to me, too, but it also sounds like something some desperate parents might see as an…
At our school they feed all the kids, but I notice a lot of left over meals in the staff fridge. There are staff members, like custodial staff, after school staff, and instructional assistants, who sometimes rely on them. I’m glad it isn’t wasted. I’m angry that they feed our kids that nasty stuff and don’t pay our…
Made a similar comment upthread. Those bootstraps really do make a mighty fine broth ... if you have said bootstraps in the first place.
I’m sure you’ve probably heard stories like this one then, but it still makes me cry when i think about it:
There’s so many possibilities that it’s hard to list them. Absentee fathers or mothers. A parent losing their job. A parent working four part time jobs but still not making a real living wage for their family. Sudden sickness in the family eating up every spare penny. Ballooning home costs.
One of my son’s friends had run out of lunch money and had gone over the max number of days without money, so he was going to get the cold sandwich treatment. My son tried to buy him lunch but was told that it was against school policy for a student to buy another student’s lunch on their account. My well groomed…
When I was in high school, one day I forgot my lunch money back at home. I failed to realize this until I go to the lunch room and stand in line, they were just about to throw away the food (which I think is another stupid policy that lots of schools have if a student can’t cover it) when a janitor came over and said…
The most amazingly fucked-up thing about this is that this is an educational institution. This is what children are learning about how people who don’t have money should be treated. That it’s a fireable offense to help them. That children should not have food if their parents can’t pay. The poor kids are learning it,…
if students are in a situation where they can’t pay for lunch, they’re given one slice of american cheese on a hamburger bun along with a small milk. Curry understandably feels that’s not enough, because no shit, we feed prisoners better than that
Hmm, let’s see. A hamburger bun, according to MyFitnessPal, is 120 calories. And I’m assuming that’s a decent sized one, not the small ones that come in multi-packs. One slice of American cheese has 60 calories (I assume that’s the cheese in these sandwiches because it’s so cheap). A carton of milk, depending on the…
Jesus would be SO proud of his followers today.
Why would she blame the individual school? She’s one of those brave souls that do what’s right, knowing full well that it may mean that there will be no choice but to face negative consequences later. She’s the woman! The real issue here is the policy. I wonder what’s it’s origins are and why. There could be legal…
As a teacher, I know kids can’t learn if they are hungry. At my school, we have free lunch for everyone because we're poor. Still I have snacks for them because for some of the kids school provides their only meals.
Boy this really fires me up. At your typical elementary school the amount of food waste on the daily is mind boggling and disturbing. So fuck the whole keeping costs down excuse. Feed the hungry!
My bible skills are a little rusty, but I think it was in the Gospel of Matthew where Jesus said “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink...”
Ugh, just fund lunches for all students. No child should be punished because their parents are poor (or irresponsible).
