My policy is never loan and never co-sign. If someone needs money and I can afford it I would rather just make a gift of it and not worry about being paid back. Also never never ever do business deals with relatives or friends!

You are not co signing a loan. You are both taking out a loan and will both have the liability and benefit of the loan. Completely different animal.
