I haven’t read the article but I didn’t think with the warm mist humidifiers that bacteria was an issue. I have a filter based cold humidifier and the minerals all get caught in the filter while the bacteria is killed with the chemical.

I use my standard humidifier and add a small amount of bacteriostat to the water. Does the trick.
