This is an awesome idea, even though the need for it make me sad. There are definitely times when I hail a cab or Uber late at night and wonder if me getting into a locked car with a man I don't know is actually any safer than getting on the subway.

I used to write a column for Portland's alternative weekly about my adventures driving a cab at night. I thought some of you might enjoy the first one:

I drove a cab in Portland for a few years, where cabs are dispatched, rather than flagged down. I had SO many women ask for my cell number, so they could call me directly. Dancers in particular, had horror stories of guys trying to get, umm, alternate payment.

Try taking something you love doing, add deadlines, a boss telling you how to do it, And the fact that you have to do it 40+ hours a week continuously for the next 20 years, and that thing you love becomes something you hate.

Yes! I completely agree. I wish it was changed to something like - Almost all of us have to work, you may not have a lot of choice in what you do but focus on the aspects of your job that don't suck.
