I have a bottle of liquid fabric softener and it has since "separated". I have to give it a shake to use it. Works well enough for my needs, but I just put the cap into the front load of the wash and not through the receptacle because I'm confident it won't separate and leave a mess in the cup.

I agree with the characterization that "Chinese food" isn't really Chinese in a number of ways. It's specialized, fast food that North Americans know AND thousands of years of cooking history across dozens of cultures that comprise "China" proper. Our cultural shorthand shouldn't substitute for the real thing.
