For the first few years Android phones came with several physical buttons. Alot of them had physical pickup/hangup call buttons, search, home, menu, and back. I don’t think software buttons were natively supported in Android until late 2011 with Ice Cream Sandwich.

Yeah, the Steve Jobs biography has lots of examples of this. The last minute design change of the Apple Store prototype that Ron Johnson had suggested to him is a good example. He also wanted Intel to design an Atom chip for the original iPad until his team convinced him to stick with ARM architecture.
