Yeah, I’m having a hard time mustering much outrage over James Gunn’s tweets. They’re fairly tasteless and not at all funny, but it’s pretty arbitrary to single him out. A few points:

No, he’s apologized for the tweets before too, and spoken openly about them. There’s other examples, but here’s an excerpt from an interview done May of last year to promote Guardians of t he Galaxy Vol. 2:

The part about this that bothers me the most is that he’s publicly apologized, and very much seems to not be that person anymore. If we start telling people that there’s no way to ever recover from or atone for their mistakes, they won’t bother trying, and the world will get a whole lot darker.
