Not to be a jerk about it - but keep reading that same document into the next paragraph. The entire point of that reading is, it doesn’t track historically with why such a document would hold up. It grants the Americans too much agency and the Japanese too little. It doesn’t explain what actually happened very well…
What’s impressively progressive about that one was that not only did the creator of the Sailor Moon never deny that was her intent, but was exasperated by the confusion that the first US Dub caused about it.
Yes and No. Hirohito has an extremely large impact in why certain decisions were made. Same thing with the “no military”.
My interpretation was that Miorine is more likely to be lesbian since the marriage arrangement purely political and she was never really interested in Guel, while Suletta might be bi based on how she responded to Elan and Guel
What? They’re totally not gay. Mio is just like that Aunt who has a female roommate. They live together. Hang out a lot. Buy tons of Tegan and Sara merch. Are VERY affectionate around each other. But totally just roommates and not gay.
it should probably be emphasized Japanese fans (and elsewhere for that matter) are also pretty mad about this debacle. too many outsiders are trying to frame this as westerners being upset about anime not having representation (though, actually, people have been giving this show a lot of praise for its representation,…
I will say the memes for Bandai Namco’s fuck-up have been *fire* and I’m loving every minute of it
Japan is probably more responsible for causing “straight” people to experience same-sex attraction than any other country in the world so it isn’t that surprising it’s largely “straight” and old governing demographic is trying really hard to repress that part of the culture.
Usually, when a fan of “X” show says “this character is actually gay because this and that” is just him stretching some facts thin to fit his opinion, but this Gundam show was gay from start to finish, and it’s a shame they are trying to recall this fact because the show was actually very good!
Hugh Grant in the 90's maybe? I mean, he bounced back from it, but it was super fast fall.
Kramer was instant. I would say Lizzo’s is faster than Ellen’s because corroboration with Lizzo came so quickly. Until this article I was still on the fence, but it’s definitely starting to look like it’s true... though I still don’t know if it’s Lizzo directly for most of this or someone acting on her behalf (for…
Perhaps not as dramatic, but Jonah Hill? Supposedly there were rumors about him and of course Jay Baruchel’s prescience but I think for the most part he had a solid reputation.
Missing the obvious one, Tom Cruise.
I am trying to think of the last time a celebrity went from “seems nice and cool” to “holy crap, what a nasty psycho” this quickly. Maybe Ellen? Michael Richards (Kramer)? Do you all remember any other public image downfalls like this?
It’s such a shame when people we look up to turn out to be assholes. Having been in a similar circumstance, it makes it so easy (admittedly, this is my while male privilege talking) to just give up on trying to help anymore.
Except she wasn’t some rando who put a (D) next to her name. She’d been in politics as an abortion rights Democrat for almost a decade. There was no reason folks would think she developed some weird victimhood mentality based on people not praising her enough (it probably started in 2016 when she didn’t win her run…
She doesn’t really seem to harbor any strongly held beliefs other than a desire to be praised, coddled and given attention.
She’s lucky I’m not one of her constituents, I’d be banging down her door demanding her resignation. People have the right to honest and truthful representation.
