A competent world builder would have had a heroic Slytherin character and a morally terrible Gryffindor character in the FIRST book. Perhaps since it’s a book for babies, a character would have said out loud, “Oh, you can’t judge people solely from reputation, you have to get to know who they are inside!”…

Rowlings had plenty of opportunities to try and make Slytherin house more nuanced. The other houses as well. Instead she just put all the good guys in one house. All the bad guys in another and then mostly forgot the other two houses except for an occasional character here and there.

And it used to be the basis of English education; Look up the Eleven Plus Exam. Deciding your entire education, and thus prospects at 11 years old. And from there, if you were sorted into Public (really private, elitest) schools you might find further classification into the Houses...
