We got the kids smartphones around 13 with no service. Basically a glorified iPod. Then at 16, we got them unlimited texting. (T-Mobile $15 prepaid.) After 18 month, or at 17 1/2, they were on their own. If they wanted service, they had to pay for it. Get a job, get a bank account and here's your pin....
