My 2012 MS3 reports about 30 mpg on a tank, but when I do the calculation when filling up with gas it’s about 27. So I wouldn’t trust the computer’s readout. Still better than the 25 mpg highway EPA estimate.

Shop at Aldi! I just moved to LA where there are none and miss it so much! Several factors result in you spending less time in the store:

At my last job I had a standing desk and loved it. I worked up to standing about 6 hours a day and sitting 3 (including lunch), and did that for about a year. I got a new job 2 months ago with a regular desk, and I feel so lethargic sitting all day.

I don't consider a 401(k) investing as much as just mandatory retirement planning because there's no selling involved, but I started that straight out of college. My employer also had a discounted employee stock purchase plan which was my first real investing.

I bought one of these but promptly returned it. Medium-large grind was inconsistent due to the design of the mechanism, and the nut on top would loosen while I was grinding. It was frustrating to set up and work, and I'm a mechanical engineer.

I bought a used one of these on eBay for $75 over 2 years ago and have been loving it for pour over coffee.

This is ridiculously good advice. One way to adhere to it is to avoid comparison shopping unless you already know you really need an item.

The anti-nutrient sediment makes sense but also makes me wonder: after doing this research, what's your take on Soylent?

Although the guidelines for labeling food are well-defined, they're not really that strict. For example, for packaged/ processed food like pizza to be labeled "organic," it only needs to be made from 70% organic ingredients.

The Clever Coffee Dripper turned me into a coffee snob, and for only $22. I can no longer enjoy the office coffee pot or Starbucks. I have two at home and one at my desk at work. Easy to use, super easy to clean (especially compared to French press), and completely delicious.

I second this grinder. I bought a used Encore on eBay for $75 and it's been grinding like a champ for over a year. It makes a consistent grind for my Clever Coffee Dripper. It's easy to clean, but does leave some residual grounds on the counter after each grind.

I had a similar situation with my wife. I'm a saver earning twice what she makes, and she's a spender who had student loans. You need to talk about it with her and be 100% sure that she wants to and is able to agree to a joint budget and adjust her spending habits, or the arguments and stress will never stop.

Now playing

I started playing cello at age 8. I actually always liked practicing just for the challenge of mastering songs.
When my teachers suggested my parents buy a cello instead if renting, we toured some luthiers' workshops while shopping. That sure instilled in me an interest and respect for the instruments, and I highly

Exactly, like an emergency fund specifically for a car (separate from my other emergency fund). In fact, what used to go to collision insurance now goes to that fund, like being self-insured. Since it's a 96 Civic with 175k miles I don't know when it will kick the bucket, but driving less than 5k miles a year I'm

I'm using a riskier strategy for my car fund: I saved enough to buy a decent car and put it all in stocks. When my current car bites the dust, if stocks are up I'll get a nicer car, if they're down I'll get a cheaper car. I can handle that sort of risk.

Live well below your means (as if you were still poor-ish) and sock away as much as you can. Max out your 401(k) and a Roth IRA. I don't mean just get employer match, I mean $17500 IRS limit. Put more savings in an index fund.

I bought a Baratza Encore used on eBay about a year ago and love it. You can get them on Amazon though at less of a discount.

I also adhere to 3 accounts: 1 joint and 2 for our individual monthly play money that we don't have to explain to each other.

A surgeon told me a story of a time that while operating, he kept getting faint whiffs of a delicious cooked meat. It was distracting and mouth-watering, but odd in an operating room. He then realized it was the burn victim on whom he was operating, and immediately had to leave to vomit in disgust.
