This game seems to represent a developer that is trying to push the envelope in a desperate attempt to give their cliched and relatively simplistic/simpleminded game some semblance of publicity without paying much for said publicity.

You can adjust the black border. A few directs ago, Sakurai said that you can disable it, iirc. The reason it existed was because Sakurai thought that it would be hard to tell the characters from the backdrop against a small screen (don't quote me on that, I was paraphrasing.)
