I am always fascinated by linguistics and etymology. Let me know if you find anything, even if it is in French.
Some historical background:
Was just reading on this! It's based on British common law from where it was passed on to the colonies. Upon marriage a woman's legal rights were incorporated into those of her husband. Husband and wife legally became one person and that person was the husband. Therefore it makes sense to address a woman as a spouse,…
Interesting. In Spanish it's almost the opposite. You would say "husband and woman" (marido y mujer). There is also a word for wife (esposa), but the word for woman (mujer) has both meanings. A man can say "my woman" when referring to his wife but women will say "my husband".
You're right. Normally it is the paternal surname that gets carried down. In certain countries parents do get to choose which surname will go first (and therefore get passed on).
The practice does vary by country and is mainly a social convention. It is however legal in the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Ecuador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras, Peru, Panama, and to a certain extent in Mexico. It has been declining in recent years but still fairly common in some places.
Yep, where did she go?
Spain has gender equality laws where the order of the surnames is up to the parents, so children get both and parents essentially get to choose which one will be passed on.
What I find even scarier is women being referred as Mrs. John Smith. Not only does she not have her own last name, her entire identity has been erased and now she exists solely in relation to the person she married. Now that's crazy.
Ha!
Twilight is terrible. The writing is abysmal and the plot is beyond bad. I started reading the first one and kept complaining about how godawful it was and whether the editor had made it past the 6th grade. Then I went and I got the next two books and read the hell out of those too. Hate reading is definitely a thing.…
We got the stuff out and then when the time came to prepare the food she said she was missing a condiment package, which turned out to be the silica gel.
I think it did come with a seasoning package, she just expected a second one. I honestly don't know how she could think silica pellets were in any way edible. I guess it being "Mexican" food merited some exotic ingredients.
My friend was cooking dinner from one of those taco kits and mentioned it was missing the spice package and told me it normally came with condiments. I located the box and all that was left in there was the silica gel, which turned out to be the "seasonings." Apparently she had never bothered to read the "do not eat"…
Jordy the rapping French baby!

Most men who harass women on the street do so because they are cowards and feel empowered by being able to dominate otherwise inaccessible women. They rely on the fact that they can do and say whatever they want and their subject will most likely shrink away or ignore the interaction. However, this is not always the…
I mainly eat it raw. Can mix it in with other fruit or with yoghurt and granola as well as cereal. Also great for smoothies. Strawberry and orange are good smoothie combinations, but you can basically throw in whatever you like.
I eat a lot of fruit and have found that it helps having different types in the kitchen.
