Ahem. “Arrival” is a short story — by the incomparably talented Ted Chiang, entitled “Story of Your Life” and published in 1998 as part of the Tor series “Starlight” (volume 2) edited by Patrick Nielsen Hayden. It won a Nebula for best novella in 2000.
The ‘melodrama’ was NOT added for the film, IMHO.
