It is true that I am only commenting on my experience, and my experience has been limited to the Northern Caribbean, Bahamas, Turks, Virgin Islands etc. But I can guarantee you up here most of the black locals don't swim, and the ones that do are mostly male.

Give it a try, I spent roughly half my life living in the Caribbean and have never been stung by any thing or had my bones shattered. Of course I don't know where you are, so maybe that is not the case. In the areas I have lived it is mostly because culturally the girls are suppose to stay home.

It is sad how many people, especially girls don't know how to swim in the caribbean. They are surrounded by the most beautiful water in the world. Straight out of Uni I worked for a non profit that taught girls in the Bahamas how to swim. Sadly it doesn't exist anymore because of funding not because it isn't needed.
