4th Gear: Putting the Hurt in Hertz
4th Gear: Putting the Hurt in Hertz
I get the idea of being a mostly back end EIC, but Patrick didn’t write a ton and you still felt his presence all over the site. There was tons of communication from all of the editors here on what was going on, and I never got that from Jalopnik under Rory
Oh Jesus. Yeah, That TV movie scared the shit out of me. I was really too young to understand all of the complex geopolitics concerning Reagan, Gorbechov, arms treaties and so on. The bad guys in the action movies were always the Russians.
I was in 6th grade when the Soviet Union collapsed. We were all happy about…
I do think there are some sanctions that are going to have an affect on the wealthy - frozen bank accounts and increased difficulty transferring funds. Naturally, they have money pretty much everywhere and a ton of it is going to be easy to convert into liquid assets. But, the fewer resources available to oligarchs is…
I thought the commentary about a “Caesar solution” was mostly silly, but now increasingly believe there have to be people of major influence in Russia who don’t want to see their country involved in a nuclear war, its people impoverished, and senior military personnel tried as war criminals.
Not everything is terrible or a crisis, not every article calls for snark, and not everything is getting worse all the time.
GenX here. Had nuclear war nightmares, saw “The Day After” etc. My 9th grade civics teacher, who was weird, dressed funny, and everyone thought pervy, always used to say "You can always trust a Russian to be a Russian!" Guess he wasn't wrong.
At the very least, an option to view the entire thing as a list instead.
I think I speak for everyone when I say that the thing we want most is no more slideshows!
As a 40-something year old person, old enough to remember when the Soviet Union was on the nightly ABC news with Peter Jennings, where it was a country that made international headlines when the first McDonald’s opened there, and when Reagan made them enemy No 1 it is astounding how rapidly Russia’s status has reverted…
What would you like to see more of at Jalopnik as a site?
The irony is that this weekend I saw the highest gas prices of my lifetime and saw my first Buggati Veyron on the road in my city.
lifting sanctions helps now. exploring for more viable oil fields could take years to get the wells and infrastructure built up.
Actually historically gas prices drop, no matter what. People drive what they drive because they know high gas prices is temporary.
It’s wild that the US is talking to Venezuela and Iran about possibly opening up their supplies by possibly lessening their sanctions, but not opening up more oil exploration here.
Its crazy how much disdain people have for the working class who can't afford to live near where they work.
2. From what I’ve read, Russian oil is selling at a big discount. The high prices are helping everybody else, including Canadian and US oil producers.
Not exactly.
My impressions:
Glad to see you guys are back, I hope you got what you wanted.
