I also adored his performance in Dalek.

You know, I'm pretty over the moon that game companies are starting to do this. Creative Assembly hired the people over at Extra Credits to do a video series on the Roman history a little bit back, and I hope more companies jump on this bandwagon. IMO a dash of real history or literature makes playing the game a much

Oh Korea, you make me proud!

Well, I certainly don't think so :p

I've been asking that for decades, and I hope I get an answer before I die.

I'm not sure if I agree with you here, and I'm not saying that the portrayal ought to be exclusive. A good deal of the Klingons in Star Trek were played by black actors and I'm not sure that there has ever been any drama surrounding that.

You're of course right that we don't live in a color blind world—and probably never will—and that the media affects society, but let me paint this a different way.

You could always get black actors for the role.

Agreed. It's a shame that many of his episodes just weren't written very well, considering how good his performance was.

I found this a few months ago and lost the next few hours afterward.

I think you're misconstruing what Shankel was saying; as I read it (and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, Jason), his problem was not with the fact that pregnancy is often handled shoddily in fiction, but that the argument that any female character who is defined by pregnancy is, by definition, a sexist character

Wouldn't Finn be absolutely essential in a discussion about racism in fiction, particularly the racism associated with America's slave legacy? I'd put it there along with To Kill a Mockingbird and Uncle Tom's Cabin as some of the most important books to bring up.

Good point, but I think there are a few distinctions, and the biggest one—I think—is how HL1 handled scripted sequences. The game never broke from 1st person perspective and never took control of the camera away from the player, so even though you had a very linear path through the game and pre-determined "plot

Yet there was something charming about some of those old titles and the room they afforded for exploration. For me, Marathon stands out as a good example.

I'd say that's part of it, but not all scripted sequences are created equal. There's been a huge push toward "cinematic gameplay," particularly in the past half-decade, and I think that's probably part of the reason for so many scripted sequences and linear gameplay.

You are absolutely right, and I feel like an idiot now :p

Good to know. Thanks :)

I couldn't tell you, I haven't seen the show.

I can't agree with you here. There's a difference between an sexism or racism and a stereotypical representation. Granted, some stereotypes are racist and sexist, but I don't that these are.

But, why? Would it be sexist if there was a boy who's only development was going through puberty and dealing with his new found sexual urges? Is it racist if an Asian character is the kung-fu practicing, meditating stoic of the group? Stereotypical, perhaps, but I'd hesitate to say that either of those are
