Well it's not like R is mainstream be it in Europe or NA. I personally love the sleeper looks of it and rather have the VW interior than more space. It's for small demographic and I do get why you would get it.

I wouldn't own the MK7 GTI. I'm not a fan of it either. But it is a well built car. I wouldn't mind driving one, just wouldn't really own one.

Unpopular opinion time. I didn't like the MKVI Golf R. It was numb, too many electronic nannies, and understeered like crazy. For all that money I'd have rather bought a GTI and modified that. At it's price it just was not a good deal. So many better options if you're going to blow $36k on a sport compact or hot…

On it's own, Porsh doesn't sound terrible. It makes me cringe because I've always said it the right way, but the real issue is when you add a model name.
