As someone who has interest in this film but has never really watched a single episode of any of the macross series: Is it safe to jump into this one or is there a series/movie I should watch first to get me up to speed?

The one where he kicks the guy against the box or w/e is two part, which is why you see his gun pop in for a second. You have a second to either shoot him in the back or melee again to stab.

You have to get right up to the guy and hit it and there's a a chance it will do that kick to spin them around instead requiring you to act once again to finish the move. Also they're pretty lengthy compared to a lot of the knife-kills in other games. It's no less risky than the split-second switch to knife.

Probably won't show up but the melee kills (primarly knives) in Killzone 3 are the very best in a non Third Person game I have ever seen.
